Before we get into Jamar’s story, I want to take a moment to say this: All the information I’m sharing here was originally gathered by Project: Cold Case as part of its collaboration with the University of North Florida’s Applied Journalism class. I’m so grateful for the work they’ve done—this is their story, their research. I’m simply using my platform to help amplify it. Whether it’s through this blog, a reel, or any other way I can help, I’m doing this to honor their efforts and, more importantly, to honor Jamar.
So, thank you to Project: Cold Case and UNF. You’re making a difference. I just hope to play a small part in keeping these stories alive.

“Jamar was me,” his dad said.
That line hit me hard when I read it. You can feel the heartbreak behind those words. Jamar Campbell wasn’t just another name on a list of unsolved murders—he was someone’s son, someone’s dad, someone’s everything.
On October 28, 2020, Jamar was found in his Toyota Camry in Chester, Pennsylvania. He had been shot multiple times. The paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. He was only 21.
Just two weeks before that, Jamar became a father. His daughter was born, and he was doing everything he could to be present for her. His family said he spent every possible moment with her. Now, she’ll grow up without him—and his loved ones are left with nothing but memories and pain.

He Was the Heart of His Family
Jamar’s family describes him as a mix of everything—he could be a pain sometimes, but he had the biggest heart. He’d give you the shoes off his feet. He didn’t just say he loved his family—he showed it every single day.
He was the one who shoveled snow, took out the trash for his grandma, mowed the lawn, planned the birthday parties, made sure no holiday was skipped. He was the family guy, through and through.
His mom, Tawana, knew something was off the night he died. When he didn’t return her calls or take the trash out like usual, she just had that gut feeling something was wrong. The next morning, the family found out what had happened the worst way possible—by reading a local news article. It described a car matching Jamar’s with a gunshot victim inside.
No one had called them yet. No one had confirmed it. But they already knew.
He Just Turned 21
Jamar had just celebrated his 21st birthday. He picked the theme himself: Disney Pixar’s Cars. That’s who he was—fun-loving, full of life, still a kid at heart. His whole family came together to celebrate him. His dad later said it felt like there was something special in the air that day. Something telling them to remember it.
And they do. It was the last birthday he’d ever have.
Jamar Chose a Different Path—One That Worked for Him
Instead of going to college, Jamar chose to learn a trade. He was good with his hands and wanted to build a future that way. He had goals, he had dreams, and he was working hard to make them happen.
When he wasn’t with family, he loved to fish, travel, and had just started getting into playing pool. But again—family was everything. That’s what mattered most to him.
The Last Thing His Mom Said
The last time Tawana talked to Jamar, she told him: “I love you. Come home.”
She says that line over and over in her heart now. It was supposed to be a normal goodbye. Now it’s a forever one.
Still No Answers
Jamar’s case is still unsolved. No arrests. No justice. Just questions—and a whole lot of pain.
But here’s the thing: someone out there knows what happened. Someone saw something, heard something, or knows something that could bring this family some peace.

This Shouldn’t Be the End of Jamar’s Story
Jamar needs justice—he was real, and he was loved. His little girl should’ve grown up knowing her dad. His mom should still be getting phone calls and trash day reminders. His family should be planning more birthdays, not just remembering the last one.
It’s easy to scroll past stories like this. But I hope you don’t. I hope you sit with it for a second. I hope you say his name out loud. I hope you care.
Because Jamar deserved better. His family deserves answers. And justice can’t happen unless we keep telling his story.
A Huge Thank You to Project: Cold Case
If you’re not familiar with them, Project: Cold Case is a nonprofit based in Jacksonville, Florida. They do the hard work of keeping unsolved homicide cases in the public eye—and supporting the families left behind.
They also connect with student journalists to help share these stories, which is how this one came to life. Honestly, the work they do is incredible, and I’m just grateful to help carry it forward.
